Marilyn Johansen walked in the footsteps of her father, Eugene F. Phillips. On January 25th of 1945 Second Lieutenant Eugene Phillips a POW in Stalag Luft III was force marched out of the camp along with 10,500 Allied POWs . It was the coldest winter in Europe in 20 years.
Hitler was losing the war and marched all his POWs from many camp in Poland and Germany to Bavaria, 70,000 allied would barley survive till April 29th when they were liberated by General George Patten.
In 2024 Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks created a mini series released on Apple TV titled ‘Masters of the Air’. This March is featured in the last episode 9 of the series.
The Russians were coming to take the war torn countries like Poland, Hungary, Yugoslavia ,
parts of Germany and more!
This march would be the beginning of the Cold War! Little did my father Eugene know that he would spend the rest of his military career fighting the Cold War!
